Join us for this mystical evening as Allan Armstrong will give a talk about two new books published by Imagier Publications – Five English Alchemists (by Robert Black) & Symbolic Colours (by Baron Frederic de Portal, first English publication since 1845!). Allan Armstrong is an esoteric scholar, the Prior of the Order of Dionysius & Paul, a position he has held since 1991. The ODP is a Religious Order dedicated to the contemplative life and the study of Comparative Religion, Mythology and Symbolism. His life’s work is devoted to developing a greater understanding of the spiritual life and the path of spiritual perfection in the context of the Order curriculum. His research interests reflect this in his a life long study of Spiritual Disciplines; Prayer & Meditation; Ritual; Healing; Kabbalah and Mysticism.

“Five English Alchemists” is an introduction to the most significant English exponents of the Alchemical Mysteries of the pre-Enlightenment era, who believed, as did the Greek philosophers before them, that all metals were based on a combination of the four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water. They knew how to change a base metal into gold by rearranging the proportions of these elements. This they achieved with the aid of a secret catalyst – the Philosopher’s Stone, and the main concern of the alchemist was the search for and preparation of this enigmatic substance.

The author, Doctor Robert Black, (born in 1925) has dedicated his life to the study of chemistry. In the course of his work he was led to understand that alchemy was not only a proto-science but also a profound spiritual discipline that connecting alchemy with modern chemistry. Dr. Black is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and of the Society of Chemical Industry, and, in other fields, of the Society for Psychical Research and of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia, of which he was for many years Recorder-General.

“Symbolic Colours” is a rare and valuable treatise concerning the symbolism of colour written in 1837 by Baron Frederic de Portal. It was published in English as a limited edition of 100 copies in 1845. There has been no English edition published since!

Within the covers of this book the reader will discover a mine of information and lore, with many references scarcely known today concerning medieval symbolism and ancient uses of colour. He demonstrates throughout a profound familiarity with the esoteric teachings discreetly transmitted from generation to generation in the schools of initiation that have existed in one form or another throughout the history of humanity.

Frederic de Portal (1804 – 1876) was born into a minor noble family from the Languedoc who could trace their ancestry back to the early medieval period. They were very active during the Cathar wars of the Albigensian Crusade. However, it was Frederic, the Jurist, historian and author, who became, perhaps, the most distinguished head of his family. He is known to have written another book on symbolism but it was for this book, which was utilised by Eliphas Levi in his studies of the Kabbalah, that he is deservedly best known.
