Christian Spirituality

Christian Spirituality Books Christianity is a monotheistic religion centred on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, as presented in the New Testament. Christians believe that Jesus is the begotten Son of God and the Messiah (Christ) prophesied in the Old Testament. To Christians, Jesus Christ is a teacher, the model of a virtuous life, the revealer of God, and most importantly the saviour of humanity who suffered, died, and was resurrected to bring about salvation from sin. Christians maintain that Jesus ascended into heaven, and most denominations teach that Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead, granting everlasting life to his followers. Christians call the message of Jesus Christ the Gospel ("good news") and hence label the written accounts of his ministry as gospels.

  • Temple Mysticism: An Introduction

According to Margaret Barker's groundbreaking theory, temple mysticism underpins much of the Bible. Rooted in the cult of the first temple in ancient Judaism, it helps us to understand the origins of Christianity. Temple mysticism was received and taught as oral tradition, and many texts were changed or suppressed or kept from public access. Barker first examines biblical texts: Isaiah, the prophet whom Jesus quoted more than any other in Scripture, and John. Then she proposes a more detailed picture, drawing on a wide variety of non-biblical texts. The resulting book presents some remarkable results. Learn More

  • Hildegard Of Bingen: Essential Writings and Chants of a Christian Mystic - Annotated & Explained

Hildegard of Bingen (1098 1179) was a Christian mystic, visionary, abbess, composer, dramatist, poet and healer. The brilliance and passion of her writings - including inscriptions of her visions, letters, liturgical antiphons, hymns, a morality play and medical and scientific works - speak to readers within the church as well as those who are not formally religious but have an interest in mysticism, the spiritual life, the relationship between spirituality and creativity, feminist and eco-spiritualities and the arts. Though considered a controversial figure in her day, she was recently canonised and proclaimed a doctor of the church, an honour extended to only three other women saints in Christian history. This groundbreaking introduction to her rich and varied writings presents a wide range of Hildegard's works grouped by theme, providing a deeper understanding of this influential spiritual figure than single-themed collections can. Insightful and instructive annotations provide the reader with suggestions for how to read or listen to mediaeval mystical texts as well as how to engage fully with Latin chants, allowing readers to effectually begin a dialogue between the world of this twelfth-century mystic and our own. • The Book of Joy

Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships – or, as they would say, because of them – they are two of the most joyful people on the planet. In April 2015, Archbishop Tutu travelled to the Dalai Lama’s home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate His Holiness’s eightieth birthday and to create this book as a gift for others. They looked back on their long lives to answer a single burning question: how do we find joy in the face of life’s inevitable suffering? They traded intimate stories, teased each other continually, and shared their spiritual practices. By the end of a week filled with laughter and punctuated with tears, these two global heroes had stared into the abyss and despair of our times and revealed how to live a life brimming with joy. This book offers us a rare opportunity to experience their astonishing and unprecedented week together, from the first embrace to the final goodbye. Learn More

  • Revelation Road

If you're reading this, we're still alive. The end of the world has not occurred. But it can't be long now, can it? For two thousand years, the Book of Revelation has inspired countless conspiracy theorists, film-makers, writers and artists, as well as theologians and teachers. But why are we so bothered? After all, the end of the world still hasn't turned up, and it's been quite a while now. When Nick Page wanted to get to the bottom of what this mysterious book is really all about, he realised there was only one way to go about it: he had to go to the land of apocalypse. Travelling to Patmos via the ruined cities of the seven churches of Revelation, determined to seek out a revelation of his own, Nick explores the culture behind Revelation, who wrote it, why they wrote it, and what it means for us today. Mixing history, commentary, creative reconstruction and sun-crazed travelogue, here at last is the (perhaps not quite) final word on heaven, hell, the four horsemen of the apocalypse - and why the end of the world never does turn up when it's supposed to. • Cagliostro - The Unknown Master: A Critical and Historical Study of High Magic

First published in French in 1912, this detailed and extensively referenced biography of one of history's most enigmatic figures has the advantage of having been written by one of the early twentieth century's leading esotericists, Dr. Marc Haven (real name Dr. Emmanuel Lalande). Born in Lorraine in 1868, and trained as a medical doctor at the University of Paris, Haven (a close associate of the legendary Papus) brought all his scientific training and esoteric knowledge to bear on the mass of source material - often confused, sometimes contradictory, sometimes scurrilous, almost always hostile - which had accumulated around a man who, at various times and places, was described as a thief, an impostor, a philanderer and a charlatan. The Cagliostro that emerges from these pages - deeply moral, courageous, witty, lovable, a healer of unparalleled talent, a skillful alchemist, an early champion of women's rights, a reformer of Freemasonry and, above all, a true Christian - is far removed from the absurd diamond-encrusted charlatan of fiction and film. Haven's meticulous analysis of the writings of those who knew the man on a day-to-day basis and his willingness to let him speak for himself in his own noble and powerful words, restore him to his rightful place as one of the truly great figures of Western esotericism as well as a man who, had he succeeded in two of his major projects - preventing the French Revolution and persuading the Roman Catholic church to embrace his Egyptian Rite - would have changed the course of history. By turns hilarious and deeply moving, Haven's book remains, despite its age, one of the most colourful and comprehensive sources of information about this enigmatic figure as well as one of the finest esoteric biographies ever written. Paul Ferguson's translation of Haven's revised and corrected text is enriched with a short biography of the author, prefaces by 'Secret History of the World' author Jonathan Black and leading occult writer and Cagliostro expert Philippa Faulks, and a list of English-language Internet sources. Anyone with an interest in 18th century social and cultural history will enjoy this book, as well as esotericists, Rosicrucians, Freemasons and anyone concerned to see one of history's most maligned figures.
